Queen Bertha of Swabia
In the background are the lakeshores of Neuchâtel and the surrounding medieval lakeside village, Estavayer. The Queen wears the Castle of Chenaux as a crown. In the far right-hand corner we see the symbol of St. Laurent Collegiate Church facing the Castle. Legend has it that the Queen taught the villagers different crafts such as spinning cotton to support themselves. In the foreground lies her testament with the number 963 written in roman numerals to depict the year of her death when the Queen left instructions to her daughter to maintain the monastery and convents that she established.
