Courbet....the life

This painting is inspired by two works 'The Desperate Man' and 'Sunset on Lake Léman' by the French Master Painter Gustave Courbet.

The water and landscape is viewed from the city of La Tour-de-Peilz, the city where Courbet lived in exile. The boat in the foreground symbolizes his escape. The mast of the boat is replaced by the symbol of justice in allegory to his persecutions in connection to the case of the Vendome Column.

His portrait in the background holds a paintbrush, his weapon of expression, from clenched fists brandished in anger, and the intensity of his eye compels us to be a witness.
